Forbes Announces 10 Best Ski Resorts for Families
Forbes Magazine recently announced their list of the 10 Best Ski Resorts for Families in the U.S. and Canada."The best (ski resorts) offer excellent group and private instruction geared towards children of all ages, plus dedicated teaching areas on the slopes. Many have free or discounted lift tickets, equipment rentals, and even lessons for children. For non-skiing members of the family, they should have day care or supervised kid’s camps with a variety of activities. Ski resorts and towns can also be family friendly off the slopes. There should be a variety of family entertainment options for evenings, nights, and non-ski days. While posh boutiques and glamorous cocktail hours attract many to resorts like Aspen, these are not nearly as big selling points for families as having a mountain coaster or zip lines. There should be a wide variety of reasonably priced family restaurants, and ideally, lodging that caters to families, like condos with multiple bedrooms and a kitchen for eating breakfast in, a touch many families Go Tahoe for a heavenly ski vacation

So what should you expect, flying from Florida -- over two perfectly good ski mountain ranges -- to ski the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe? Simply put, expect the greatest overall skiing and riding experience in these United States.

Tahoe, 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, is the largest Alpine lake in North America and straddles the states of California and Nevada, about 45 miles from Reno and 200 miles from San Francisco. Taken as a whole and in no particular order, Lake Tahoe has:
Weather: An average winter high of 43 degrees, mostly sunny weather, with very rare instances of bitter cold, unlike the inner ranges.
Snow: Usually lots of it. About 800 inches (that's 67 feet!) last season, with 40-plus powder days, and averaging 350 to 500 inches of great quality snow.
Resorts: Three mega-sized and seven large-to-moderate ski areas, and a huge Nordic resort, surround the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Terrain: Appeals on all levels. Squaw Valley is internationally known for its steeps. Snowmaking at Heavenly and Northstar is among the best in the United States.
Scenery: Most resorts have gorgeous views of the Sierra Range and the always-blue, never-frozen Lake Tahoe; and snow-laden evergreens beat bare-naked aspens anytime.
Real, small towns and Reno: Sure, you have the A-Class trappings, but real towns mean good, cheaper options for lodging and food.
Apres-ski: They have the jubilant bar and club scene at the resorts, but there's also an assortment of gaming casinos in North and South Lake and in nearby Reno. They offer 24/7 entertainment, gaming and great bargains in lodging and food.

Spotlight On Tignes
Why Tignes? Simply put, it’s one of the best ski areas in the world. The village may not have the quintessential classy feel of St Moritz, Zermatt or Megève and there are no fur coats for sale in the shops! But let us not forget, Tignes’ popularity developed in the ’80’s when France brought skiing to the masses and enabled thousands of skiers just like ourselves to get cheap skiing. We crammed ourselves 6 to an apartment suitable for 2 adults of average size! But we skied and we learned and we had the time of our lives and many British skiers were able to purchase property in French ski resorts to ski even more. Try buying a property in St Moritz or Zermatt!
So how does Tignes live up to this claim? Firstly, they have one of the longest seasons anywhere in France and most of Europe. The glacier opens on the 1st October, the Espace Killy from the 26th November and stays open until May 8th. They have also recently built the ‘Lagoon’ – a leisure complex with a swimming pool equipped with slides, segregated swimming lanes, fitness, spa and sauna. And this year they’re building a high altitude sports centre complete with its own indoor running track for national teams from other sports to train at altitude. If you visit in the summer, everyone is outdoors – cycling, walking, running, playing football, basketball and volleyball. Plus there’s the lake where people launch themselves off a giant ramp practising their freeskiing!
But most importantly, it’s all about the skiing – with two great ski resorts linked to form the Espace Killy with over 300km of slopes, giving you high altitude skiing with a history of the best ski conditions around. The villages of Tignes perched at over 2,000m make it amongst the highest ski resorts in Europe. For those that want to stay on the pistes and travel, in one direction you have Les Brevieres and in the other Val d’Isère and on to Le Fornet, and if you need height you’ve got the Grande Motte Funicular that will whisk you to a height of 3456m in a matter of minutes, then up from there!
If you’re looking for the off-piste, it’s easily accessible from the lifts with an abundance of backcountry routes. Rather then discourage off-piste skiing like many areas, Tignes welcomes it, and has worked hard to ensure off-piste skiers are well educated and know the risks. They’ve built test stations where you can check your transceivers near access to off-piste and backcountry routes with comprehensive information about snow conditions, safety and hazards.
Then there’s the prices – yes all resorts are expensive these days but in Tignes there are still places where you can get a sandwich and coffee for lunch and don’t need to take out a loan! With a huge selection of accommodation in Tignes-le-Lac, le Lavachet and Val-Claret, there’s an option to suit everyones needs and pocket.
As instructors when we go skiing in Tignes we register with the Marie and have exactly the same rights as every ski school and ski instructor in Tignes – lift priority, attendance at local meetings and a say in the development of Tignes. Now that’s really something.

Looking for a career change? Why not get a job that comes with a powder clause. We spoke to the people who hold some of the most desirable jobs in skiing — filmmakers, product designers, marketing managers — about how to get their job.
“When your passion is your job, you never work a day in your life,” says Jordan Grano, founder of Folsom Custom Skis in Boulder, Colorado. “To have a chance to affect the industry you love in a positive way and help people enjoy their time skiing is what motivates me.” Many boutique ski companies are spawned by skiers, usually after they’re dissatisfied with the skis already out on the market. Perks include testing the skis during powder days. How to break in: Find a gap in the current market and be creative on how you can help fill it. Study ski design from other companies and stay motivated. Grano doesn’t have a degree in designing, instead he spent years doing personal, in-depth field work with skis he built before he began marketing them.

Skiing & Wine
Ski amadé ski huts have a reputation with guests for good quality and a convivial atmosphere. In Austria, skiing, good food and a nice glass of wine are inseparable. This winter, the combination has been perfected to heighten the enjoyable experience when skiing in Ski amadé. Selected, certified huts will be offering a diverse range of high-quality Austrian wines and the "Genuss-Partner" certification outside a hut will help to point skiers in the right direction. The landlords have to meet strict criteria in order to be awarded a certificate. They have to offer a specific number of Austrian wines which guests can enjoy by the glass. The wines must be served in suitable glasses and staff must be given training in Austrian wines. The landlords are assisted and certified by Austrian Wine Marketing (ÖWM) and the Salzburg Sommeliers' Association. By the start of the season many huts in the ski association will already be able to flaunt their signs (see below). Other ski huts are in the process of being certified.
Skiing holidays are good for your health
A study conducted by the University of Salzburg and the Christian Doppler Laboratory, on "Biomechanics in skiing" proves that skiing has a positive impact on physical and mental wellbeing. Irrespective of their physical prowess and skiing technique, skiers achieve the intensity of physical exertion that the World Health Organisation (WHO) defines as beneficial for fitness and health. Skiing has an especially positive impact on general wellbeing – the positive attitude increases significantly over the course of the day. Ski amadé has responded to this study with a special offer – the Ski Well package. Over two hours, the wellness coach and ski instructor show guests how they can benefit their health with the right skiing technique. The pulse monitor analyses calorie consumption, altitude covered, EPOC rate and changes in pulse rate. The ski school provides the pulse monitors and chest strap.
=> Price: 99 euros.
As part of this initiative the Gastein ski region is offering guests the ideal opportunity to prepare for a perfect skiing season. The Ski Well package here includes 3 nights' accommodation, a 3-day ski pass and a 2-hour private lesson with a ski instructor, a sports medicine examination, including a lactate test, a sports technique consultation and analysis, muscle function test, a radon thermal bath and entry to the Bad Hofgastein thermal spa.

Skiing for people with disabilities
Skiing for people with disabilities became popular after World War II with the return of injured veterans.[citation needed] It is both a recreational pastime and a competitive sport open to those with any manner of cognitive and/or physical disabilities. Adaptations include the use of outriggers, ski tip retention devices, sit-skis like monoskis and bi-skis, brightly colored guide bibs, ski guides, and inter-skier communication systems or audible clues for blind skiers. A guide skier can assist the sit-skier from behind, this is known as "bucketing".
Recreational skiing programs for people with disabilities exist at mountains across the globe.
Currently the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the International Ski Federation (FIS) sanction a number of regional, national, and international disabled skiing events, most notably a World Cup circuit, a Disabled Alpine Skiing World Championships, and the Paralympic Winter Games. One of the strongest disabled programs is the U.S. Disabled Ski Team, organized by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association and the U.S. Ski Team.

Types of skiing
In skiing's traditional core regions in the snowy parts of Scandinavia, as well as in places such as Alaska, both recreational and competitive skiing is as likely to refer to the cross-country variants as to the internationally downhill variants.
Skiing techniques are difficult to master, and accordingly there are ski schools that teach everything from the basics of turning and stopping safely to more advanced carving, racing, mogul or "bump" skiing and newer freestyle techniques. There are two primary types of downhill skiing – "telemark" and "alpine."
For beginning skiers learning under a trained instructor, skiing speeds are low, the terrain is not steep and is often well-manicured, and the risks are relatively low. For extreme skiers, testing their expert abilities against ever more challenging terrain, the risks may be much higher.
Alpine skiing
Alpine skiing is also called downhill skiing. Typically, downhill skiing takes place at a ski resort with specified ski pistes or ski runs. Ski resorts that offer downhill skiing exist all over the world in cold climate areas. Non-competitive alpine skiing is recreational skiing. Also in the category of Alpine skiing are the competitions known as Slalom, Giant Slalom (GS), Super-G (Super Giant Slalom) and Downhill.Freestyle skiing
Alpine Freestyle: This kind of skiing employs the use of aerial acrobatics and balance, balance being necessary for rails. The use of rails is known as grinding or jibbing. Alpine freestyle was pioneered by Stein Eriksen in 1962. It developed in the 1970s into a style called Hotdogging. In this type of skiing, skiers use jumps (also called kickers or launches) or rails to do aerial tricks. These tricks are reinvented and progressed in technique and style every day.[25]Freestyle/Newschool: Freestyle skiing is the type of skiing with which tricks are usually associated. The skis used are generally of a twin tip design, made to land switch tricks (backwards) as easily as forwards. Tricks are generally spins and flips, that can be conjoined with a grabbing of the ski to improve the image of the trick. Freestyle skiing generally takes place in terrain parks at ski resorts, with a wide variety of jumps, rails, jibs and other features to session. Mogul skiing is also considered as freestyle skiing.
Freeskiing/Freeride Related to freestyle skiing in nature is freeriding, which involves taking the tricks done in the park to the rest of the mountain and the backcountry. Thus, fatter skis may be used to float on top of the powder. Freeriding often involves steeps, cliffs, powder, glades, and other epic runs. In part due to the growing popularity of freestyle skiing in recent years and the obvious limitations in that aspect of the sport, freeride skiing has also been growing in popularity in recent years as more and more skiers have access to good backcountry gear and skis.
Nordic skiing
Nordc skiing is also called Cross-country skiing or Cross-country racing. The name distinguishes it from Alpine skiing.Typically after donning appropriate clothing, the skier goes outside and skis in a local park or even on a snowy street. Nordic skiing is the oldest form of skiing and was developed in Scandinavia as a way of travelling in the winter. Telemark skiing refers to skiing downhill on nordic skiis.
'Nordic jumping, also called ski-flying and ski jumping, is a competition in which skiers glide down a long ramp before becoming airborne. This is done with Nordic style skis, meaning that the heels of boot and binding are detached from the ski. The skis are much longer and wider than other types of skis and jumping is typically done without ski-poles.
Skiing
Skiing is a recreational activity using skis as equipment for traveling over snow. Skis are used in conjunction with boots that connect to the ski with use of a binding.
Skiing can be grouped into two general categories. The older of the two disciplines originated in Scandinavia and uses free-heel bindings that attach at the toes of the skier's boots but not at the heels. Types of Nordic skiing include cross-country, ski jumping and Telemark. Alpine skiing (more often called "downhill skiing"), originated in the European Alps, and is characterized by fixed-heel bindings that attach at both the toe and the heel of the skier's boot.
